Description
Instruction:
Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBDs) are among the digestive tract disorders that have infected millions of people around the world.Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are two main types of inflammatory bowel diseases. These diseases are a common health problem and result in many complications and healthcare costs. In addition, IBD seems to trigger malignancy in the colon. On the other hand, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) also is a type of bowel dysfunction characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and changes in bowel habits, without specific cause. Since both disorders occur with similar symptoms, the differentiation of these disorders is very important to choose a therapeutic route. The definite diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease is possible based on endoscopic and radiological processes. Therefore, the physician has to use invasive methods to get the right decision for treatment. Over the past years, extensive efforts have been made by many researchers to introduce a biomarker for non-invasive diagnosis of this disease, and Calprotectin test is one of the main biomarkers.Calprotectin is a 36-kDa protein produced by granulocytes, monocytes, and squamous epithelial cells (except the cells in normal skin). This protein is part of the inherent immune system and has an inhibitory effect on bacteria and fungi.During intestinal inflammation in IBD, leukocytosis happens in the intestinal mucosa, and as a result, granulocytes release their cytoplasmic contents in the intestinal lumen. Since more than 60% of the cytosolic proteins in granulocytes and macrophages are composed of Calprotectin, this protein is considered to be a diagnosis marker for intestinal inflammation.
