Total protein normal range is 6.0 to 8.3 grams per deciliter (g/dL) or 60 to 83 g/L. total protein high in blood increases the concentration of protein in the bloodstream. High total protein level could indicate dehydration or certain type of cancer, such as multiple myeloma that causes protein to accumulate abnormally.

Proteins react with cupric ions under alkaline pH to produce a color complex. This color complex absorbs light at 546 nm.(530-570 nm.). The intensity of the color is directly proportional to the protein concentration in the specimen.
